2/28 Notes

The Lions signed center Dominic Raiola to a 5 year deal worth about 17.5 million with a 4.6 million dollar signing bonus. The Lions are now assured of having three of their five starting offensive linemen back for the 2005 season-Jeff Backus, Damien Woody, and Raiola.

The Pistons continued their hot streak with another win on the road. They beat the Warriors 94-88. Tayshaun Prince led the way with 23 points. This was the Pistons 12th win in their last 13 games.

Tigers Reading

Here are some good articles about the Detroit Tigers. Please check them out.

A Season Of Potential, Really

Spring Training Thoughts

SI's MLB Truth And Rumors Round-up

SI.com took a look at some rumors floating around MLB this Spring Training. Some of the notables:

Remember Houston's loss of Beltran to a $17 million per year contract? Well guess what... Lance Berkman wants $15-17 million over five years. The Astros have offered $12 million over three and four. The result? Berkman said "no thanks" and gave them a deadline of opening day to come up with the new contract.

Mike Sweeney, who has missed 146 games over three seasons, says he feels better than he has in recent years. Is it too late to stop a trade? GM Allard Baird says not right now. According to the Kansas City Star, he's dismissed all trade rumors.

Cameron for Urbina? Newsday says the Mets have shown interest. I'm also sure the Tigers wouldn't mind see Cameron man CF. Newsday reports one of the wants from the Tigers is $3-4 million cash to help with the $12.5 million Cameron salary. Not a bad deal. Tigers could benefit from it, but would be hurt in the bullpen. I like the idea of Ugie setting up and Percival closing. We'll keep an eye on this one.

More rumors can be found here at SI.com.

NBA Moving Day

Yesterday was the trade deadline in the NBA. The Detroit Pistons did not make any moves so the team they have now is going to be the team that is going to defend the NBA Championship. Other teams in the NBA did make deals though. The biggest players that were moved were Chris Webber, Baron Davis, Gary Payton, and Antoine Walker. Wojo: Pistons still the team to beat

National focus is always elsewhere, but Detroit just keeps getting better.
Detroit News article by Bob Wojnowski

Auburn Hills -- It's still about Shaq, Shaq, Shaq. And when it's not about Shaq, Shaq, Shaq, who now has a tricky knee, it's about San Antonio or Phoenix or one of the other twinkly Western teams. And when it's not about them, it's about the plight of Jermaine O'Neal and poor Indiana, still crushed by the brawl.

Soon, very soon, it will be about the Pistons again. In fact, after watching them shred foe after foe the past month, after the early injuries and suspensions and bouts of drifting concentration, we feel comfortable announcing something few people want to say.

The NBA title still goes right through The Palace.

Oh, and this, too: These Pistons are better than last year's champs. Their offense is better. Tayshaun Prince is much better. And newcomer Carlos Arroyo makes them suddenly quicker.

My view: I agree. This team is deeper, has more offense, and the drive to repeat. The NBA Title still has to go through the Palace, and I don't think Big Ben, Rip or Rasheed is ready to give it to someone else. Delfino is coming back from his injury and he will be a big plus down the stretch.

Webber traded to Sixers

Former Michigan star Chris Webber will now join forces with Allen Iverson in the Eastern Conference. He is the big man that Iverson has been craving all season. Read the Detroit News article.

Moss to Oakland?

The Minnesota Vikings are going to trade Randy Moss to the Oakland Raiders. This is good news for the Detroit Lions because Moss is now out of their division. This trade should open up the division even more for the Lions.

Start it up

I am trying to get this site going. I am going to change the design from this ugly one. I hope to get it all set in about 2 weeks. This site will cover national and Detroit Sports. Anyways, here is an article I wrote a few days ago.

Weekend Notes

This story is a few days old but I would still like to mention how the Tigers traded a few minor leaguers to the Cubs for relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth. Farnsworth is a fairly good pitcher who has a fast ball that can reach 100 MPH. His era has bounced up and down over the years so you never know what you will get out this guy. His best year was in 2001 when he had a 2.74 era along with 107 strikeouts in 82 innings pitched. This was a good trade for the Tigers. They did not have to give up much for him. He is solid and he should help out the bullpen. This was probably the Tigers last move before spring training starts.

I have not mentioned anything about the NHL in a long time. The NHL is in a lockout this season. The owners want a salary cap and the players don't want a salary cap. The season is pretty much done. Even if a miracle happened and the players and owners reached an agreement, the season would have less than 30 games(per team) before the playoffs started. The future of the NHL is unknown right now. This season is shot and next season might not happen either. What might happen is that the NHL will put in replacement players to play a season. That is a dumb idea and even less people will watch it. If they want to save the NHL they need to have the best players in the world playing, not replacement players who nobody gives a care about. It is sad to see a great league going down the tube but hopefully it can come back better than ever over the next few years.

Pistons top Wizards, Illini too much for Spartans

The Pistons continued their solid play with a 105-96 win over the improved Washington Wizards. It's the Pistons 4th straight win and put them back into first place in the Central, a 1/2 game ahead of the Cavs. The Pistons got great performances from Chauncey Billups (28 points), Tayshaun Prince (25 points), and Rip Hamilton (23 points). Read the Free Press article.

Ouch! That game hurt. MSU was in it early and made a late run, but in between Illinois was much too good for the Spartans. The Fighting Illini made 13 out of 24 three-pointers and created Spartan turnovers that led to each baskets. Chris Hill struggled at the point guard spot. Shannon Brown was inconsistent. Paul Davis was a stud early and then disappeared. None of these are new problems for the Spartans. Read the Free Press article.

NHL Season still alive?

According to this article, if NHL officials and fans are willing to accept a 30 game regular season, then there is a chance the 2004-05 season could be played. Check it out.
